Qualifications and Requirements | Police Officer |

Basic Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Men must be registered for Selective Service (www.sss.gov)
  • Total salary varies depending on location of placement
  • Position may be subject to random drug testing
  • Employee may be required to work outside regular duty hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Conditions of Employment | Police Officer |

  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required
  • Employee must maintain current certifications
  • Security clearance may be required
  • Must be qualified in using required weapons
  • Position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment and Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968
  • Must pass pre-employment medical exam, periodic checkups, and physical fitness tests
  • Must meet hearing standards and be able to discern colors, contrast, and depth
  • Must wear uniform and meet dress and appearance standards
  • May be required to wear protective gear (vests, boots, chemical safety equipment)
  • Must be able to operate all Security Forces Vehicles with a valid driver’s license

Specialized Experience Requirements | Police Officer |

Grade-Specific Qualifications

GS-05:

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-04 level or equivalent
  • OR four years curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in Police Science or related field

GS-06:

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-05 level or equivalent

GS-07:

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-06 level or equivalent

GS-08:

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-07 level or equivalent

GS-09:

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-08 level or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) | Police Officer |

Your qualifications will be reviewed based on your expertise in:

  • Law enforcement officer procedures and operating approaches
  • Special operating requirements for implementing personnel access controls
  • Civil rights of detained individuals and policies on proper use of force
  • Techniques for functioning as a quick response force team member
  • Preparation and response to catastrophic events and enemy attacks
  • Ability to operate the Incident Management System and Security Force Management Information System

Experience Considerations | Police Officer |

Part-Time or Unpaid Experience: Credit will be given for relevant unpaid and part-time work. Clearly identify duties and total hours per week.

Volunteer Work Experience: Includes paid and unpaid experience through National Service Programs (Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work builds important competencies that can translate directly to paid work.

Physical Demands | Police Officer |

The position requires:

  • Regular physical exertion (running, standing, walking, bending, stooping)
  • Physical capabilities to pursue and apprehend uncooperative suspects
  • Capability to employ “Active Shooter” response techniques as part of a team

Additional Requirements | Police Officer |

  • First-responder training/certifications in CPR, self-aid buddy care, and first aid
  • Ongoing training in tactics, techniques, and procedures for emergency response
  • Must pass formal police training school; certification from a Federally recognized Law Enforcement Academy preferred
  • Position may be designated as a Key Position under AFI 36-607

Certification Memorandum Requirements

The certification memorandum must:

  • Be on official letterhead from the member’s military service branch
  • Include name, rank, and grade of service member
  • Specify branch of Armed Forces
  • List dates of active service (start and end dates)
  • State expected date of discharge/release from active duty
  • Include terminal leave starting date (if applicable)
  • Note anticipated character of service/discharge and type of separation
  • Be certified within 120 days of expected discharge
  • Be signed by or by direction of the adjutant, personnel office, unit commander, or higher headquarters commander

Important Note: The VOW Act provides tentative preference. If selected, a DD Form 214 must be submitted upon receipt.
